Special Olympics Philosophy

:The fundamental principles of Special Olympics are as follows

  1. Special Olympics is based on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) can, with proper training and encouragement, learn to participate in, enjoy, and benefit from individual and team sports.
  2. Special Olympics believes that the development of athletic skills requires fundamental training, and competition between individuals of equal ability is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress, and motivating individual growth.
  3. Special Olympics believes that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) can develop physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually through education and athletic competition, thereby strengthening their family and community foundations.
